We are using Yellowfin as our Business Intelligence (BI) tool. I thought that I'll create a post where I'll explain how to install Yellowfin 7.1. Before we start, Yellowfin uses JAVA SE 6 or later, so install JAVA before you install Yellowfin.
Find the link below where you can download the latest JAVA SE version:
Now that Java is installed, execute the Yelowfin 7.1 .exe. You will get the following screen:
Click on the Next button. The next screen you will find the licence agreement:
When you've read through the licence agreement, you need to select I accept the terms of this licence agreement and click on the Next button. You will be redirected to the packs screen as shown below:
If you're installing Yellowfin 7.1 on a production environment, you will only need to install the Core pack. If you're installing Yellowfin 7.1 on a development environment, you can install all of the packs. If you're only developing reports and dashboards including maps, you only need the following packs:
- Core
- Tutorial Content
- World Countries Pack
On this screen you need to upload your Yellowfin license. If you don't have a license, contact your supplier or contact Yellowfin on the website (http://www.yellowfinbi.com) When you're done, click on the Next button. You will be redirected to the following screen:
Now you need to specify a port that will be used for Yellowfin 7.1 on your Web Server. If you don't have any websites that uses the port 8080, you can leave the port on 8080.
Regarding the Yellowfin Windows Service, I recommend you use the Windows Service if you are on a production environment because you can set the windows service to start automatically for when a server needs to restart. If you want to install more than one Yellowfin 7.1 instance on one server, you can't use the windows service because you can't set the windows service name and windows service names must be unique.
Click on the Next button. You will be taken to the next screen:
On this step of the installation, you need to select the database type you want to use to save your report data. Because my website is already using Microsoft SQL Server, that is the type I've selected. There are a lot of options for your database types including the following:
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Microsoft SQL Server Azure
- MySQL
- Oracle
- .........
Click on the Next button after selecting your database type.
Because I've selected the Microsoft SQL Server database type, I need to provide/complete the server, connection and user detail for my SQL Server. Complete all the fields. If you're using SQL Server, the default port is 1433. The Administrator User is needed to perform all the creation and connection to your SQL Server instance. When you are done, click on the Next button:
On the last step you need to specify the path of where you want the Yellowfin Website to install to. Click on the Next button to start the Yellowfin 7.1 installation. When the installtion is done, you will be redirected to the follow screen:
Your installation is done. If you used the Yellowfin Windows Service, you need to go to the Web Server's Windows Services, find that Yellowfin Service, edit the service to start automatically. When done, you can start the Windows Service.
